Once in a while, you may feel the need to quit your job due to various reasons. Some people quit their jobs because of misunderstandings with their boss or other employees, new and better-paying jobs, going back to school, or may be due to medical reasons. What to Do
A resignation letter might or might not indicate the exact reasons for leaving your job. If you wish to indicate the reason for quitting, never say that you are leaving because you hate your job or your boss. You should leave when in good terms with your boss as you might need him or her in the future when in need of a recommendation letter when looking for new job opportunities. Leaving when in good terms also makes it easy for you in case you wish to work for the organization in the future. There are a few other things that one should do before you hand in your resignation letter. The first thing is to obtain all the documents that you need from your office computer including personal emails and delete what you do not need. You should also have all the details pertaining to your expected benefits, unused vacation and sick pay, and continuing health insurance coverage. This is because; some employers restrict employees’ access to their offices once they have handed in their resignation letters.
What not to Do
When resigning, you should hand in your resignation letter to your boss in person and not resign through a phone call or email. It is also advisable to give sufficient notice to enable your employer to find your replacement - the recommended time is two weeks’ notice, this is also to have ample time to train a new person if the position requires one to be trained in-house. Resigning without notice may land you in court as you may be charged with a breach of contract if your contract indicates that you should issue a notice of resignation. Quitting work without notice can also result in loss of your work benefits. It is also not advisable to hate on your employer and brag to your co-workers about your new job. You should instead talk about how the opportunity made you grow professionally and in fact, thank your employer for the chance to work in the organization. If you are leaving for reasons that can be resolved in due time, such as raising your children or looking after a sick spouse, you can let your employer know that wish to come back in future.
